Woman Hurt in Plainview Crash Gets $13 Million

MINEOLA, N.Y. — A Commack woman who was badly injured in crash on a county road back in 1995 will get a $13 million a settlement approved by the Nassau County Legislature Monday night.

The settlement with Merryl Kihl, 37, is the largest personal injury award in county history, said county spokeswoman Jennifer Kim.

Kihl's car slid off of Quaker Meeting House Road in Plainview and hit a tree on Jan. 13, 1995. The next day, Mary Ellen Zawicki, 38, of Garden City was killed when her car slid off the road and hit the same tree.

Kihl's attorney, Richard Kenny, said his client has irreparable spine and back injuries, that require a morphine pump implanted in her stomach to manage pain.
