Nassau County settles $13M personal injury suit

8:44 PM EST, January 29, 2008: Nassau County faced at least two major obstacles in defending itself against a lawsuit by a woman involved in a tragic car crash on a county road in 1995: It could not argue that the road was safe, and the woman presented a deeply sympathetic figure for the jury.

The long -- 13 years in the court system -- and complicated lawsuit by Merryl Kihl, 37, of Commack, came to a conclusion Monday night when the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved a $13 million award to the woman and voted a bond issue to pay for it. It was the largest personal injury settlement ever in county history, county officials said.
