State’s Mass Vaccination Sites Now Accepting Walk-ins for Everyone 16 or Older

New and Noteworthy from The Times Union, original article by ByEdward McKinley

Beginning Thursday, April 29th all New Yorkers 16 and older will be able to walk in without an appointment to obtain a coronavirus vaccine at the state's mass-vaccination sites, according to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

The step is intended to combat vaccine apprehension, and it illustrates how vaccine availability has outstripped demand, with hundreds of appointments available every day at several locations. As New York City did last week, local and county locations might also be available to walk-ins.

"All the obstacles are removed. All the barriers are removed. Just show up and roll up your sleeve and the mass-vaccination sites have the capacity to handle you, OK?” the governor said during a news conference Tuesday at Binghamton University.

Cuomo also announced that New Yorkers who are completely vaccinated would no longer be forced to wear masks indoors, despite the fact that many people still do so, based on revised guidelines from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The announcement comes after the CDC declared earlier in the day that wearing a mask outdoors for vaccinated people is no longer recommended, even in crowded areas.

COVID-19 numbers in the state are still low, with just 2.6 percent of tests coming back positive and 25 deaths confirmed in the last 24 hours. On Tuesday, Cuomo recorded 3,184 people in hospitals and 728 in intensive care units across the state.

States Sue to Block Trump's $11 Billion Health Care Cuts

New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with a coalition of state attorneys general, has filed a lawsuit to prevent the Trump administration from implementing $11 billion in cuts to public health programs. The complaint, submitted on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Rhode Island, seeks a temporary halt to these abrupt reductions, arguing that they unlawfully undermine Congress’s authority over federal spending. The cuts include more than $11 billion in federal health grants approved during the COVID-19 pandemic, with over $360 million allocated to New York state.
